Like for Like NOT – the first of a series

When listed buildings wear out there is a presumption that like is replaced with like.  Shape, materials, texture, colour and the materials themselves.

At Golden Lane you might expect this to be the presumption. It is certainly the presumption that runs throughout the Listed Building Management Guidelines adopted for the estate.

So the Loss Assessors are surprised to be shown so many areas where the new the paving does not match the paving slabs or hand-made quarry tiles. These are being replaced with paving slabs of different colour and finish and shape….

and other that are not quarry tiles at all. Much of the new paving is a mess

The Loss Assessors are dismayed by the lack of concern about these simple details when the common areas of the Estate – carefully designed by the architects as a setting and executed with great care and attention to detail – are one of the things that make the Estate remarkable.
